The four programs every SME advisor should know
EU funding for SMEs in 2026 flows through four main vehicles. Each serves a different client profile.
1. Horizon Europe (€95.5B 2021-2027)
- Target: R&D-intensive SMEs and consortia
- Typical grant: €1M – €15M per project
- Best for: Deep-tech, sustainability, health innovation
- Application: Funding & Tenders Portal — calls open year-round
2. EIC Accelerator (€10B 2021-2027)
- Target: Disruptive tech SMEs scaling beyond Series A
- Grant: Up to €2.5M grant + up to €15M equity
- Best for: Companies with prototype, seeking to scale internationally
- Acceptance rate: ~5% — extremely competitive
3. Eurostars (€1.2B 2021-2027)
- Target: R&D-performing SMEs in international collaboration
- Grant: Up to €1M per partner
- Best for: Bilateral or trilateral R&D consortia
- Application: Two cut-offs per year, March and September
4. Digital Europe / LIFE / Creative Europe (sector-specific)
- Target: Companies in digital infrastructure, climate, or creative industries
- Grant: €500K – €5M
- Best for: Mature SMEs with deployment-ready solutions

Three pitfalls Dutch advisors hit
- Treating EU like RVO. EU calls demand 60-80 pages of detailed methodology, work packages, and Gantt charts. RVO's WBSO is paragraphs; EU is essays.
- Underestimating timeline. From "we should apply" to submission: 3-6 months. Bouwen at consortia, getting Letter of Intent from partners, ESG reporting — all takes weeks each.
- Skipping Letter of Commitment from co-funder. EU expects 30-50% co-funding. Without proof of where it comes from, the proposal fails admissibility check.
